Desire2Learn Incorporated  Corporation (previously known as Desire2Learn) and commonly referred to as “D2L”, is a provider of eLearning solutions. It is the developer of the Brightspace integrated learning platform which is used by higher education institutions, K-12 school districts and corporate and government customers. Competitors include BlackBoard Inc., Instructure, Inc. and Moodle Pty Ltd.


D2L Corporation was founded in 1999by current president and CEO John Baker. The company is headquartered in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, and has 800+ staff in the US, Canada, the UK, Brazil, Singapore and Australia.[citation needed] The D2L family of companies also includes D2L Ltd, D2L Australia Pty Ltd, D2L Europe Ltd, D2L Asia Pte Ltd, and D2L Brasil Soluções de Tecnologia para Educação Ltda.


In 2012, D2L raised $80 million in financing from New Enterprise Associates (NEA) and OMERS Ventures.In 2013, the company acquired Wiggio, creator of the collaboration tool Wiggio and Knowillage Systems Inc., the creator of the adaptive learning engine LeaP.


In 2014, D2L rebranded its integrated learning platform Brightspace. The company name was also changed to D2L Corporation. In 2014, D2L raised an $85 million series B financing round led by a large institutional asset manager with participation from Columbus Nova Technology Partners, Graham Holdings, Four Rivers Group, Aurion Capital and existing investors New Enterprise Associates and OMERS Ventures. Silicon Valley Bank also provided debt financing.
